I am interested in the relationship of transportation and land use and issues of “equitable development” at the local and regional level, I pursue this in the courses I teach on transportation and community development and the research I undertake. Recent studies have addressed Vehicle Miles Travelled Reduction in Washington State, Seattle’s commercial parking tax alternatives, Growth and Transportation Efficiency Centers, and urban goods movement in smart growth environments. Over the past few years, in collaboration with UW colleagues, I have provided advice, assistance, and evaluation to the City of Seattle’s Cornerstone Communities and Enterprise Community programs and the community development corporations working in the city’s most distressed neighborhoods. I have also developed Neighborhood Revitalization Strategies for the International, Central, Southeast, Delridge, and Pioneer Square communities that were adopted by the City Council. I draw on forty-five years’ experience in the public and non-profit sectors as a big-city mayoral aide, foundation executive director, county planner, educator, applied researcher and small businessperson.
