Visiting Scholars

The Department of Urban Design and Planning welcomes visiting faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and doctoral students from across the U.S. and around the world through the University of Washington Visiting International Student Internship & Training (VISIT) and Visiting Scholar programs. The department hosts a limited number of faculty/postdoctoral visitors and graduate student visitors (typically advanced doctoral students) each year for up to 12 months.

Prospective visitors are asked to read the following information carefully and consult both the links that are provided and the departmental website for faculty and research profiles.

Program DetailsCurrent Scholars
Visiting scholars are welcome at all departmental colloquia and department events. Visiting scholars may audit courses with the permission of the instructor. They are also encouraged to enrich the departmental community in other ways, such as by participating in graduate seminars, collaborating on research projects and symposia, and inviting members of the departmental community to their home institutions.

Prospective visitors should note that the Department does not provide financial support, telephone or computer facilities, or office space to Visiting Scholars. Visitors are required to cover their own expenses in all respects in addition to the listed fees.

Departmental Visiting Scholar Fee: $250 per month for duration of visit
UW DS2019 Form Fee: approximately $300 per person, $50 fee to reissue (for date changes, etc)

The total amount of fees will be paid directly to the host department upon arrival of the Visiting Scholar.

Requirements pertaining to financial and insurance matters can be found at these two University of Washington websites:

Prospective visiting scholars should inquire 6-12 months in advance of the time of their anticipated visit.

Application and Selection Process

The Department of Urban Design and Planning receives a number of applications from prospective visitors each year. Department decisions on VISIT and Visiting Scholar applications are determined on a quarterly basis. To be considered, applicants must meet all University requirements and provide the Department Chair with the following materials:

(1) Curricula vita

(2) Statement of research intent with a description of why our department is a good fit for these pursuits

(3) Identification of potential sponsoring faculty

(4) Anticipated arrival and departure dates (months/year(s))

In selecting visiting scholars each year, the primary criteria are related to collaborative opportunities between the research interests of the prospective visitor and a faculty member in the department. Prospective visitors need to secure at least one faculty “sponsor,” that is, a faculty member whose research interests align with theirs and who supports their application to visit the department. The faculty sponsor will serve as the direct liaison and host to the university and region.

If you are interested in becoming a VISIT student or Visiting Scholar you should reach out to a faculty member whom you would like to work with and who would be willing to support your research while at the University of Washington. Visit our Faculty Page to learn more about our faculty members.
